Skatepark
Oshawa, a city who's history dates back to the 1700's and who's
name is from Seneca natives meaning "Crossing of a Stream",
is a highly industrialized city with the General Motors plant being
founded in the city within the early 1900's. With that being said,
the majority of the cities population can live a relatively high
standard of living due to the unionized workers of the plant although
the downtown core remains a constant struggle against the hardship
of being located about 50 km east of Toronto and its bustling business
and retail district. But through the hardship of a struggling economy
the city has been able to provide a 10,000 square foot park which
opened in the fall of 2003 and has a pack of some serious local
skaters. It is one of the few parks with some shade available as
well. The park is a really enjoyable place to be if you are a ledge
skater or transition guy and the 2 elements flow nicely together
here. The park was also one of the first to incorporate the "double
set" which is becoming more common with every park being built.
Be wary on first runs as the locals are fond of the wax and like
to apply more than enough for 4 months worth to the metal coping
on the ledges. Stop by and session with a few of the many talented
locals and watch out for the bikers ( quite a few for such a small
place - but they now the rules ). Don't be shy as many of you know,
it is worth the drive to skate a new park.
